10.2Urgent
Found an animal?
The Mid Canterbury Animal Welfare Centre is a small volunteer-run charity, not an emergency service. If an animal is in danger, sick, injured or being mistreated, contact the people below.
Sick, injured or mistreated animals: SPCA
SPCA New Zealand advises that if an animal is sick or injured and it is safe to do so, you take it to your nearest vet clinic. Its nearest centres to Ashburton take animal welfare complaints by phone, 8.30am to 5pm every day:
- SPCA Christchurch Centre03 349 7057
- SPCA Timaru Centre03 688 2234
For a concern that is not urgent, use SPCA's non-urgent animal welfare form, or find all SPCA centres.
Wandering, lost or found dogs: the council
Ashburton District Council runs animal control in the district. For a dog that is wandering, lost or found, contact the council: its lost and found dogs page has the number to call and what to do.
Please do not approach a dog that seems aggressive.
Any other animal question
Ring the centre on 03 308 4432 and the volunteers will help if they can, or point you to the right people.
SPCA numbers and hours were checked on spca.nz in October 2026. If in doubt, check the SPCA and council websites for the latest details.
10.3Questions
Questions from the gate.
Can I visit the centre?
Yes, but please call 03 308 4432 before visiting. The centre is run by volunteers, and we do not publish opening hours.
How do I adopt a cat or a dog?
Start by ringing or emailing. The volunteers will tell you which animals are looking for homes and how adoption works, including any costs. See Adopt.
I have found a stray or injured animal. What should I do?
The centre is not an emergency service. For a sick or injured animal, SPCA advises taking it to your nearest vet if it is safe to do so, or calling SPCA. For a dog, contact Ashburton District Council. The details are in Found an animal? above.
Is the centre part of the SPCA?
No. The Mid Canterbury Animal Welfare Centre is an independent local charity, registered in its own right with Charities Services since 2 October 2017 (number CC56428).
Can I volunteer?
Yes. The centre is run by volunteers and new ones are always welcome. Get in touch to find out what help is needed. See Volunteer.
How can I donate, and can I get a receipt?
Ring and the team will tell you how to give; this website does not take payments. Ask us about a donation receipt. See Donate.
Where does the money go?
The centre's income and expenditure for each year are filed with Charities Services and shown on our About page, with a link to the public register. For more detail, get in touch and we will tell you.
